INDIGENES - DAYS OF GLORY

This is a foreign movie that has english subtitles, if you speak french and some arabic you won't need the subs. I really enjoyed this movie. I have not seen any info on the french using north african troops so it was an enlightening movie for me. There is not much fighting in the movie but if you hold out to the end there is a dramatic ending with a fair bit of fighting. I would recommend this movie and give it two thumbs up.

Test of Will

Here is a great documentary on the Canadian involvement in the Korean War. There is lots of film footage and photographs, radio reports, speeches and letters. If you like watching the Why we Fight series of war films you will love this one. The audio is crisp and clear on this one unlike many documentaries that have just taken old footage and audio and put them to disk.
This DVD is distributed by Morningstar Entertainment in Canada (www.morningstarent.com) . The video is about 120mins, 4:3 aspect ratio with B/W and colour footage. A must have for anyone collecting war history dvds.

the last legion

Here is a newer movie (2006) I picked up at Walmart the other day. It is set during Roman times and is not too bad a movie. It has a good plot from start to end with a lot of action. Don't buy this if you are hoping for a lot of battle scenes, I found it lacking in this respect. It is more of an adventure type movie with a couple short battle scenes. There are many fight scenes in the movie thou some with a fair bit of comedy thrown in.

I found the part Romulus Augustus given toThomas Sangster to be lacking and seeing this kid walk around knowning nothing about fighting bothered me. I would think that someone being groomed to be the next Ceaser would at least know how to fight even if they were only 11 or so.

This movie also features Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley, both did excellent jobs in their rolls. Aishwarya Rai played a type of mercenary and had excellent fighting scenes.

The part that drew me to this movie was the reference to the sword Excalibur. It was interesting to see how they brought the origin of this sword into the movie and how they exit the movie, leaving it open for the tales that we all know with King Arthur and Merlin.

This movie is rated PG . There is no swearing in it, no nudity or sex scenes but beware that there is a fair bit of violence; scenes of sword fights, archery, chopping off body parts, warfare, etc. That being said my 11 year old who does not like frightening scenes was able to watch it.

The version I got was in widescreen (2.35:1) with 5.1dolby.

Pathfinder

Here is another good movie for you. This one is set in the viking era. The vikings are plundering north america and killing native indians along the way. Lots of fighting scenes with good sword fighting. The main character of the movie is a viking boy that was left behind and raised by the indians. He grows up to and learns more about himself when the vikings once again return to wreck havock on the indians again. Good plot all the way thru, I was not disappointed by this movie.
The actors are:Karl Urban, Moon Bloodgood, Russell Means, Ralf Moeller and Clancy Brown.
The movie I picked up was in widescreen 2.40:1 5.1 audio english.

300

Well I finally got out to see this movie and it was great. It is amazing what they can do in the theater now. I heard this movie was filmed entirely infront of a blue screen. It has very good effects and lots of fighting and gore in it. Truely a film fit for a man to watch. It is set in anceint Greek times. The Spartans have to battle the Persians who have come to enslave their people and take the lands. The king and 300 of his warriors meet the Persians in battle. I will not say anymore as I do not wish to ruin the plot for you.

ZULU

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy new year. Started out bad in December here had to fix the t.v. Slow it's been a bit slow. Hope to pick up things now.

Zulu is a movie from 1964 featuring Micheal Caine. Setting is around 1870 South Africa with the British fighting the Zulu Tribe. The movie is 2hrs 15mins with action all the way thru. Lots of shooting while the British force tries to hold onto its' base fighting off thousands of warriors. The version I had was wide screen and Mono soundtrack but still well worth the watch.

the hunt for eagle one

I've been looking at this movie on the shelf for a long time and Rogers video finally dropped the price to a value I was willing to gamble on.

The players in this movie are:Mark Dacascos, Theresa Randle and Rutger Hauger.

It's a classic man, or woman, behind enemy lines, lets get them out senario. Set in modern times, after 9/11 and going after Al Qaeda types holding the prisoner.

Although this movie did not look to have the big budget of Warner Bros, the action is good all the way thru. The shooting starts from the opening frame and continues all the way to the end. There is hardly a dull moment. Although the acting may not live up to the likes of Saving Private Ryan, it is pretty good and I did not feel the need to turn the movie off.

So if you are looking for a new movie with some good action in it, I give this one a 7.5 / 10.
